The Watershed Community

THE WATERSHED COMMUNITY

(Scroll down to RSVP)

Just as a geographical watershed is where waters from different sources converge and flow together, The Watershed Community brings us together in conversation with all our diverse perspectives, experiences, and ideas to help create and nourish the community we want to live in. Through conversations, our watershed moments can show us new pathways that shift us from being concerned witnesses to a historic pandemic and a real threat of autocracy to being an engaged community of hope and caring.

Our Purpose: The purpose of The Watershed Community, is to exchange ideas about what we’re reading and listening to that’s relevant to our current times, learn from each other about reliable media resources, engage in meaningful dialogue on current topics, and build a respectful, diverse, and engaged community of readers, listeners, thinkers, inquirers, and sharers.

The Dilemma: The Watershed Community addresses a dilemma many of us are now facing. We want to remain well informed and knowledgeable about what’s happening in our country and the rest of the world, especially during these distressing times, yet there are simply too many magazines, articles, podcasts, substacks, books, authors, and journalists for any of us to wade through. The Watershed Community offers a fun, engaging social solution. We can learn from each other about what’s out there, what’s worth our valuable reading and listening time, and what can help us stay current, active, and sane. This group gives us the time, space, and caring community to do all that and have fun while we’re doing it.

Participants: Suppose . . . your interests are in the general areas of politics, history, philosophy, science or any neighboring subject . . . you’re eager to discuss what you’re reading or listening to . . . you’re curious to find out about trusted sources others have discovered and share your own . . . and you’d like to expand your community of interesting, thoughtful people. If any of this rings true for you, then The Watershed Community is for you.

Meetings: We value participant involvement, flexibility, and a certain amount of structure; our 2-hour monthly meetings will embrace all of that. We’ll meet together at the beginning and end of each meeting as a whole group, and in smaller breakout groups for the heart of our sharing experience.

Breakout Groups: As we get underway, the breakout groups will alternate from month to month something like this:

Open Format: This includes (i) short reviews of media resources participants want to share, and (ii) discussions of favorite media pieces participants have read or listened to. Topical Format: This includes (i) short reviews of media resources participants want to share, and (ii) discussions of a specific topic based on an article suggested the previous month. A participant could also expand the discussion with a different media piece they’ve read or listened to that’s related to the specific topic.

Time & Place: Meetings of The Watershed Community will take place on the fourth Saturday of each month, 5-7 p.m., at the cozy Aqus Café.

What to Expect:

  • New friends & enriching ideas

  • A community of curious & thoughtful seekers of knowledge & good ideas

  • New sources of reliable information & commentary

  • An awareness & appreciation of media that strengthens the goals of a thriving, liberal democracy

  • Fun & sanity
